Historic methods of production

The following pages come from  an Albright and Wilson Ltd document prepared in conjunction with The chemistry Teaching Aids sub-committee of the science Master’s Association.

“The manufacture and uses of phosphorus and some of its compounds.” 1954

The cover photo shows a phosphorus furnace being “tapped” to remove slag.

Given the source, we will let the story be told straight from the horses mouth, as it must be accurate. What is not gleaned from their clinical account are the amount of fumes, nuisance and waste generated from the manufacture process. This would have been breathed in by the operators of such plants and the wider community.
