{"id":9710,"date":"2019-01-26T16:04:27","date_gmt":"2019-01-26T16:04:27","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/whatliesbeneathrattlechainlagoon.org.uk\/?p=9710"},"modified":"2020-12-05T17:16:26","modified_gmt":"2020-12-05T17:16:26","slug":"what-lies-over-the-old-rattlechain-brickworks","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/whatliesbeneathrattlechainlagoon.org.uk\/?p=9710","title":{"rendered":"What lies over the Old Rattlechain brickworks?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I&#8217;ve detailed several images as well as recollections and <a href=\"http:\/\/whatliesbeneathrattlechainlagoon.org.uk\/?p=9003\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">stories concerning the former Rattlechain Brickworks <\/a>already- that canalside enterprise which left us with a disused pit that unfortunately became filled with a chemical manufacturers toxic poison waste.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_5790\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\">\n<div id=\"attachment_5790\" style=\"width: 589px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/whatliesbeneathrattlechainlagoon.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/scan0010.jpg\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-5790\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-5790\" src=\"http:\/\/whatliesbeneathrattlechainlagoon.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/scan0010.jpg\" alt=\"scan0010\" width=\"579\" height=\"507\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-5790\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Rattlechain brickworks and former pit circa 1950; by now Albright and Wilson were tipping their poisonous waste into here- note the white stained banks.<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>A tool from the excellent National Library of Scotland allows composite present day \u00a0images to be superceeded onto old maps, showing the footprints of where buildings and other structures once existed. It appears to be remarkably accurate.<\/p>\n<p>Shown below are several images which demonstrate where the brickworks buildings once existed <strong>in 1904<\/strong>,\u00a0 now replaced by an\u00a0abandoned and over tipped mound of foundry sand that has greened over.<\/p>\n<p>At this point in time, the ground around John&#8217;s Lane was also at Water level. The adjacent pool on the left of Rattlechain was the Vono waste dumping lagoon which has now been concreted over to form The Autobase trading estate. It can be clearly seen how the tramway entered the pit from the works, as well as where former pit shafts were located on the North embankment and towards the South of the site and the former sewage works where Callaghan Drive now forms a border\u00a0.
