The main chemical of concern was <a href=\"http:\/\/www.inchem.org\/documents\/icsc\/icsc\/eics1118.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>sodium cyanide<\/strong><\/a>, probably one of the best known poisons to members of Jo public.<\/p>\n<p>The chemical is toxic by skin absorption through open wounds, by ingestion, and by inhalation of dust. It is however less poisonous than white phosphorus, which is highly ironic given that the shiesters of Oldbury were allowed to not only\u00a0deposit their dumpings of this chemical under water at rattlechain lagoon, but also very\u00a0often around it <a href=\"http:\/\/whatliesbeneathrattlechainlagoon.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/rattlesmell.png\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">to catch fire in the open air.<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/whatliesbeneathrattlechainlagoon.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/sodcyanide.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-9458\" src=\"http:\/\/whatliesbeneathrattlechainlagoon.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/sodcyanide-300x158.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"263\" srcset=\"https:\/\/whatliesbeneathrattlechainlagoon.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/sodcyanide-300x158.png 300w, https:\/\/whatliesbeneathrattlechainlagoon.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/sodcyanide.png 660w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Given that not only is this cyanide as well as the closely related <strong>potassium cyanide<\/strong> highly poisonous, it\u00a0also reacts badly with other chemicals to form poisonous gases. You can therefore probably appreciate why the authorities were worried at this point in time as to what might happen if widespread dumping of drums of this chemical were turning up in public places.<\/p>\n<p>The following information is given by The Health Protection Agency, now Public health England<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/assets.publishing.service.gov.uk\/government\/uploads\/system\/uploads\/attachment_data\/file\/318164\/hpa_sodium_potassium_cyanide__General_Information_v1.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Sodium\/Potassium Cyanide General information.<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/assets.publishing.service.gov.uk\/government\/uploads\/system\/uploads\/attachment_data\/file\/566573\/sodium_potassium_cyanide_incident_management.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Sodium\/Potassium Cyanide Incident management<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>A flurry of cyanide dumping cases resulted in the drafting of <strong>&#8220;The Deposit of Poisonous Wastes Act&#8221;<\/strong> passed in just 10 days in 1972. The most notable of these occurred in <strong>Nuneaton<\/strong> at a (surprise surprise) , an abandoned brickworks site which included a children&#8217;s playground. <strong>36 drums<\/strong> containing <strong>one and a half tonnes <\/strong>of Cyanide ash waste were recovered. <strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">This in theory would be enough to kill millions of people.<\/span> <\/strong><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_9469\" style=\"width: 410px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/whatliesbeneathrattlechainlagoon.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/cy9.png\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-9469\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-9469\" src=\"http:\/\/whatliesbeneathrattlechainlagoon.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/cy9-240x300.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"500\" srcset=\"https:\/\/whatliesbeneathrattlechainlagoon.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/cy9-240x300.png 240w, https:\/\/whatliesbeneathrattlechainlagoon.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/cy9.png 498w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-9469\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The front page of The Daily Mirror 25th February 1972<\/p><\/div>\n<p>It quickly became apparent that a company mark found on the drums belonged to a Coventry firm <strong>Precise Heat Treatment<\/strong>. The culprits initially pleaded not guilty , as reported in the <strong>Coventry Evening Telegraph on 26th February 1972.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/whatliesbeneathrattlechainlagoon.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/cy1.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-9459\" src=\"http:\/\/whatliesbeneathrattlechainlagoon.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/cy1-221x300.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"544\" srcset=\"https:\/\/whatliesbeneathrattlechainlagoon.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/cy1-221x300.png 221w, https:\/\/whatliesbeneathrattlechainlagoon.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/cy1.png 418w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>A few things emerge from this first article.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The &#8220;firm&#8221; in the spotlight if you could even call it that was run by one man with one employee.<\/li>\n<li>A multitude of &#8220;companies&#8221; appear to have had some hand in the dubious operations of removing waste.<\/li>\n<li>The drums contained a 20 per cent residue of sodium cyanide<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/whatliesbeneathrattlechainlagoon.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/cy2.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-9460\" src=\"http:\/\/whatliesbeneathrattlechainlagoon.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/cy2-162x300.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"743\" srcset=\"https:\/\/whatliesbeneathrattlechainlagoon.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/cy2-162x300.png 162w, https:\/\/whatliesbeneathrattlechainlagoon.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/cy2.png 259w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>A subsequent headline from the same paper on 8th June reveals that the owner of the company and two other individuals were on trial for the dumping of the cyanide waste.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/whatliesbeneathrattlechainlagoon.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/cy3.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-9463\" src=\"http:\/\/whatliesbeneathrattlechainlagoon.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/cy3-300x180.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"241\" srcset=\"https:\/\/whatliesbeneathrattlechainlagoon.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/cy3-300x180.png 300w, https:\/\/whatliesbeneathrattlechainlagoon.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/cy3.png 645w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/whatliesbeneathrattlechainlagoon.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/cy4.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-9461\" src=\"http:\/\/whatliesbeneathrattlechainlagoon.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/cy4-274x300.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"438\" srcset=\"https:\/\/whatliesbeneathrattlechainlagoon.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/cy4-274x300.png 274w, https:\/\/whatliesbeneathrattlechainlagoon.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/cy4.png 448w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The two men <strong>John Monaghan<\/strong> and <strong>Michael Keeling<\/strong> were paid just \u00a350 to dispose of the waste for another company. It is bizarre to hear that the so called &#8220;witness&#8221; for the prosecution was not fussed about where the two charlatons of the road were dumping the waste. Today he and his company would also face the prosecution that they should have here. The other defendant- <strong>Terrence Singlehurst<\/strong> denied aiding and abetting the two men for his &#8220;company&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>The two tippers were subsequently found guilty as The Coventry Evening Telegraph from <span style=\"font-family: georgia,palatino,serif; font-size: 12pt;\"><span lang=\"EN\" style=\"margin: 0px; color: #333333; line-height: 107%;\"><strong>9th June 1972<\/strong> reveals<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>, yet it could be asked if the punishment fitted the crime and if the verdict had been applied equally to all parties involved in the affair. Keeling was fined \u00a3100 and got six months in prison for the dumping of the cyanide in two locations and also for being a benefit fiddler. A maximum of five years imprisonment and unlimited fines for the dumping of poisonous, noxious or polluting waste was brought in.
