{"id":8977,"date":"2018-01-26T17:35:30","date_gmt":"2018-01-26T17:35:30","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/whatliesbeneathrattlechainlagoon.org.uk\/?p=8977"},"modified":"2018-01-27T15:56:34","modified_gmt":"2018-01-27T15:56:34","slug":"rattlechain-lagoon-1957-phosphorus-a-peril-to-children","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/whatliesbeneathrattlechainlagoon.org.uk\/?p=8977","title":{"rendered":"Rattlechain lagoon 1957- phosphorus &#8220;a peril to children&#8221;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 24pt;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">THE NOTORIOUS RATTLECHAIN LAGOON<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/whatliesbeneathrattlechainlagoon.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/poison.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-9239\" src=\"http:\/\/whatliesbeneathrattlechainlagoon.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/poison-300x275.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"366\" srcset=\"https:\/\/whatliesbeneathrattlechainlagoon.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/poison-300x275.png 300w, https:\/\/whatliesbeneathrattlechainlagoon.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/poison.png 487w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>For many years I had heard the stories from many unconnected people- and they couldn&#8217;t all have been mistaken\u00a0in remembering daydreams from childhood or early adulthood. <strong>Rattlechain lagoon <a href=\"http:\/\/whatliesbeneathrattlechainlagoon.org.uk\/?page_id=402\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the former marlhole that had once served the adjoining brickworks <\/a>was a dangerous playground for children and skimming stones across the pool produced &#8220;sparks&#8221; when the phosphorus in the low water levelled pit reacted.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I subsequently met local old boy Malcom Edge who agreed to\u00a0let me <a href=\"http:\/\/whatliesbeneathrattlechainlagoon.org.uk\/?page_id=7472\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reproduce\u00a0an excellent piece about his recollections of the era that had earlier appeared online.\u00a0<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><i>&#8220;Oh such fun it was to heave large bricks and rocks from the neighbouring Rattlechain Brickworks, into this sludge and watch in delight as the resulting splash would erupt into flames.&#8221;<\/i><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I now have the documented proof which confirms this, that others would like to forget and pass off as &#8220;urban legend&#8221; . The article below is vindication of everything that Malcolm and others from the local area remember and it is proof that this lagoon was known to be <strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">&#8220;a peril to children&#8221;<\/span><\/strong> back in the 1950&#8217;s. It is also proof that the council at this time &#8211; <strong>Rowley Regis<\/strong>, were concerned about what was going on there, concerned enough to be questioning if it should be occurring there at all. The only question one can ask from this is <strong>why the\u00a0bloody hell\u00a0did it continue for so long after this- in fact for almost another 50 years concerning depositing the highly dangerous and toxic waste there?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This newspaper article <strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">&#8220;Glowing water &#8216;peril to children&#8217;<\/span> <\/strong>from the <strong>4th November 1957<\/strong> <strong>Birmingham Post and Gazette<\/strong> confirms that Rowley Regis council were aware of this danger and expressed it as such in the public domain.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-size: 24pt;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">&#8220;Rowley Regis council foresees danger and is trying to stop an Oldbury firm depositing phosphorus there. &#8220;<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/whatliesbeneathrattlechainlagoon.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/peril2.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-9234\" src=\"http:\/\/whatliesbeneathrattlechainlagoon.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/peril2-300x18.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"43\" srcset=\"https:\/\/whatliesbeneathrattlechainlagoon.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/peril2-300x18.png 300w, https:\/\/whatliesbeneathrattlechainlagoon.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/peril2-768x47.png 768w, https:\/\/whatliesbeneathrattlechainlagoon.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/peril2-1024x63.png 1024w, https:\/\/whatliesbeneathrattlechainlagoon.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/peril2.png 1142w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/whatliesbeneathrattlechainlagoon.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/Rattleperil.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-8981\" src=\"http:\/\/whatliesbeneathrattlechainlagoon.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/Rattleperil-276x300.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"376\" height=\"409\" srcset=\"https:\/\/whatliesbeneathrattlechainlagoon.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/Rattleperil-276x300.png 276w, https:\/\/whatliesbeneathrattlechainlagoon.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/Rattleperil.png 529w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 376px) 100vw, 376px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Here we have a councillor <strong>E.N Thorne<\/strong> stating in public that<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-size: 24pt;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">&#8220;This is a menace to the youngsters of the area.&#8221;<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The article states that <span style=\"font-size: 18pt;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">&#8220;It is also alleged that the phosphorus gives off a nasty smell.&#8221; <\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>There is of course no &#8220;alleged&#8221; about this <strong>fact<\/strong>, as what is described here would be phosphine gas and the smell of rotten eggs\/garlic. Of course <a href=\"http:\/\/whatliesbeneathrattlechainlagoon.org.uk\/?p=9194\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the adjacent sewage works <\/a>at this time may have helped to mask this smell- but there is no doubt that it would have been there.<\/p>\n<p>Further revelations are provided in the ending statement.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-size: 24pt;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">&#8220;It is brought to the marlhole by canal barge. Sometimes it is brought by lorry and dumped on the side of the marlhole where it burns itself out.&#8221;<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/whatliesbeneathrattlechainlagoon.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/sewage1.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-9216\" src=\"http:\/\/whatliesbeneathrattlechainlagoon.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/sewage1-300x130.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"304\" srcset=\"https:\/\/whatliesbeneathrattlechainlagoon.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/sewage1-300x130.png 300w, https:\/\/whatliesbeneathrattlechainlagoon.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/sewage1.png 705w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The picture above from 1950 appears to confirm that a form of service road was being used for offloading of waste from this area by road haulage. The remains of this are still present at the site today. <a href=\"http:\/\/whatliesbeneathrattlechainlagoon.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/scan0007-700.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Here&#8217;s what it looked like in 1955<\/a>. The subsidiary smaller lagoon (<a href=\"http:\/\/whatliesbeneathrattlechainlagoon.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/scan0008-700.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">created around 1961<\/a>) from within the main single pool\u00a0that was laughably known as &#8220;the clean side lagoon&#8221; by The Environment agency as well as the liars of Albright and Wilson and latterly Rhodia, is not of course in this picture as it did not exist at this point.<\/p>\n<p>We are aware of the phosphorus canal traffic legacy from excellent first hand primary sources from <a href=\"http:\/\/whatliesbeneathrattlechainlagoon.org.uk\/?page_id=8595\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">David Wilson <\/a>and more latterly <a href=\"http:\/\/whatliesbeneathrattlechainlagoon.org.uk\/?page_id=3645\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Roy Martin<\/a>, but the revelation that it was also brought by lorry at this time indicates far more than was previously admitted by the liars of Trinity Street. This would significantly increase the amount of waste that they were dumping there- particularly barrelled wastes where they conveniently have always claimed no records existed before 1974 with site licensing.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_9242\" style=\"width: 510px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/whatliesbeneathrattlechainlagoon.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/3-0-0.jpg\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-9242\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-9242\" src=\"http:\/\/whatliesbeneathrattlechainlagoon.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/3-0-0.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"500\" srcset=\"https:\/\/whatliesbeneathrattlechainlagoon.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/3-0-0.jpg 256w, https:\/\/whatliesbeneathrattlechainlagoon.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/3-0-0-150x150.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-9242\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">one polluted lagoon &#8211; there is no &#8220;clean side&#8221;<\/p><\/div>\n<p>It shows no health and safety whatsoever and also shows total disregard for the safety of the public. Let&#8217;s be clear here that <a href=\"http:\/\/whatliesbeneathrattlechainlagoon.org.uk\/?page_id=38\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">this material and its breakdown products are dangerous to human health.<\/a>\u00a0 The &#8220;glowing&#8221; phossy water, though obviously poisonous is less of a concern than the sediment under the water that it was hiding. I&#8217;m not sure if the councillors really got this point- and I&#8217;m certain that few have ever since! I do however note that just 5 years after this local concern of white phosphorus being dumped in an open pit in Tividale , the substance <a href=\"https:\/\/www.whatdotheyknow.com\/request\/62567\/response\/156112\/attach\/3\/The%20Animals%20Cruel%20Poisons%20Regulations%201963%20No%201278.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">was banned for use in rat poison by Government legislation<\/a> for being <a href=\"http:\/\/whatliesbeneathrattlechainlagoon.org.uk\/?page_id=521\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">&#8220;cruel in it&#8217;s effect&#8221;.<\/a> <strong>WHY THEN NO BAN ON DUMPING IT IN THE OPEN AIR?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>That it was dumped to burn itself out means that particles of white phosphorus would remain within the area. Not all phosphorus \u00a0disappears when left to &#8220;burn itself out&#8221;. The staining on the bank would appear to show what was occurring at this time.<\/p>\n<p>Let&#8217;s also be aware that at this time Albright and Wilson had a <a href=\"http:\/\/whatliesbeneathrattlechainlagoon.org.uk\/?p=8890\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">considerable &#8220;smell&#8221; problem in Oldbury<\/a> and had talked of <a href=\"http:\/\/whatliesbeneathrattlechainlagoon.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/oldburysmell12.png\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">dumping it into the North Sea<\/a>. I doubt very much it ever left Rowley Regis and this marlhole.<\/p>\n<p>Only some 40 odd years later would <a href=\"http:\/\/whatliesbeneathrattlechainlagoon.org.uk\/?page_id=7215\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">systemic poisoning by white phosphorus in the unfortunate wildfowl landing in this swamp be proven <\/a>, after the long denials of the company that had dumped it there- <strong>they knew full well what was to blame all along.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 18pt;\"><strong>The white\/yellow phosphorus peril is still all there , \u00a0it&#8217;s what lies beneath rattlechain lagoon.<\/strong> <\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>THE NOTORIOUS RATTLECHAIN LAGOON For many years I had heard the stories from many unconnected people- and they couldn&#8217;t all have been mistaken\u00a0in remembering daydreams from childhood or early adulthood.
