Brickmaking may have ended with a whimper in the 1960&#8217;s though the canal basin which used to serve the site is more overgrown with trees now, though I suspect the pollution below this is filled with many old bricks that were thrown in when the works themselves were demolished.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/whatliesbeneathrattlechainlagoon.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/H2460002.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-5574 aligncenter\" alt=\"H2460002\" src=\"http:\/\/whatliesbeneathrattlechainlagoon.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/H2460002.jpg\" width=\"360\" height=\"640\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0Stopboard grooves can be seen on the entrance to what remains of the basin. I have seen historic pictures of the site held by South Staffordshire council which reveals a fairly sizeable v shaped basin was still there in 1964.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_5575\" style=\"width: 650px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/whatliesbeneathrattlechainlagoon.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/H2460003.jpg\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-5575\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-5575\" alt=\"H2460003\" src=\"http:\/\/whatliesbeneathrattlechainlagoon.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/H2460003.jpg\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-5575\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">a stopboard groove<\/p><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/whatliesbeneathrattlechainlagoon.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/H2460004.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-5576\" alt=\"H2460004\" src=\"http:\/\/whatliesbeneathrattlechainlagoon.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/H2460004.jpg\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0It must have taken some considerable skill to enter the basin with such a tight\u00a0turn. <a title=\"rattlechain brickworks Crown Copyright 1948\" href=\"http:\/\/whatliesbeneathrattlechainlagoon.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/scan0032.jpg\" target=\"_blank\">This picture <\/a>from 1948 just shows the bridge entry point below to the right.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/whatliesbeneathrattlechainlagoon.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/H2460006.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-5577\" alt=\"H2460006\" src=\"http:\/\/whatliesbeneathrattlechainlagoon.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/H2460006.jpg\" width=\"628\" height=\"341\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Unfortunately many of the rounded blue bricks that capped the bridge have been stolen, a problem across the area. Though British Waterways used to replace them, it seems that much of the will has gone now.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 650px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/whatliesbeneathrattlechainlagoon.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/H2210008.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"H2210008\" src=\"http:\/\/whatliesbeneathrattlechainlagoon.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/H2210008.jpg\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Land where once was water<\/p><\/div>\n<div>\u00a0<\/div>\n<p>Around the brickworks area and within rattlechain lagoon itself there is a multitude of pottery and bottles, much of it buried below the surface of the North embankment, hence why bottle digging was a popular activity here.<\/p>\n<p>But there is no record of any bottle factory in the area shown by the historic maps which can account for such a hefty haul.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_5579\" style=\"width: 650px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/whatliesbeneathrattlechainlagoon.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/H2710005.jpg\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-5579\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-5579\" alt=\"H2710005\" src=\"http:\/\/whatliesbeneathrattlechainlagoon.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/H2710005.jpg\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-5579\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">&#8220;I&#8217;m a little teapot short and stout&#8221;<\/p><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_5582\" style=\"width: 650px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/whatliesbeneathrattlechainlagoon.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/20130514-052558.jpg\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-5582\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-5582\" alt=\"20130514-052558\" src=\"http:\/\/whatliesbeneathrattlechainlagoon.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/20130514-052558.jpg\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-5582\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">A bottle unearthed on the north embankment during the 2013 works<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The bottle below was unearthed by Heyrman De Roeck contractors digging on the North West embankment. I do not know the origin or contents of what it may have contained, but the name &#8220;Gibsons&#8221; is written in the marbley glass.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_5583\" style=\"width: 650px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/whatliesbeneathrattlechainlagoon.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/20130426-172745.jpg\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-5583\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-5583\" alt=\"20130426-172745\" src=\"http:\/\/whatliesbeneathrattlechainlagoon.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/20130426-172745.jpg\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-5583\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Poison?<\/p><\/div>\n<p>If anyone can elaborate on this firm or what this may have contained please drop us a line. What it may have been doing in the Rattlechain site is another matter entirely.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/whatliesbeneathrattlechainlagoon.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/20130426-172755.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-5584\" alt=\"20130426-172755\" src=\"http:\/\/whatliesbeneathrattlechainlagoon.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/20130426-172755.jpg\" width=\"633\" height=\"345\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Also unearthed in 2013 was an old Albright and Wilson sign denying responsibility for any injury.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/whatliesbeneathrattlechainlagoon.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/20130502-171328002.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-5581\" alt=\"20130502-171328(002)\" src=\"http:\/\/whatliesbeneathrattlechainlagoon.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/20130502-171328002.jpg\" width=\"595\" height=\"314\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>We now have a similar situation with &#8220;Rhodia UK Limited&#8221;.
