But who was this named after, as a newby to the area may be mistaken for thinking that the Balaji temple nearby was where it got its name. Not so, as this structure was commenced far more recently in 1992.<\/p>\n<p id=\"firstHeading\" class=\"firstHeading mw-first-heading\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Henry_John_Temple,_3rd_Viscount_Palmerston\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span class=\"mw-page-title-main\" style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Henry John <strong>Temple<\/strong>, 3rd viscount Palmerstone <\/span><\/a><span class=\"mw-page-title-main\" style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">was Prime Minister of this wretched country between 1855-1858 and 1859-1865. What is even worse is that he was the first Liberal Prime Minister. His <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Henry_Temple,_2nd_Viscount_Palmerston\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">father<\/a> and therefore his whole family gained power through a rotten borough system of land ownership and the peerage system. Perhaps after all, naming the area estate after him was not out of place in the borough of Sandwell with Oldbury at its centre!<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The bright idea therefore of this estate by those in the council was to choose British Prime Ministers as the names of the streets,\u00a0 with much later additions to those from the 1970&#8217;s continuing the leitmotiv of political heavyweight dross, but in their deluded eyes perhaps to gentrify the area with these &#8220;paragons of virtue&#8221;? Perhaps these were all free masons, that would not surprise me at all. \ud83d\ude09<\/p>\n<p>Obviously, Lord <strong>Palmerstone<\/strong> as he was known gives its name to another extension street off Macdonald Close <strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Palmerstone Drive<\/span><\/strong>. <strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Shelbourne Close<\/span><\/strong> is named after <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/William_Petty,_2nd_Earl_of_Shelburne\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">William Petty<\/a> who was the second earl of Shelburne though Sandwell council appear to have misspelt the name!<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Macdonald Close<\/span> <\/strong>is named after the more recent <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ramsay_MacDonald\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ramsey MacDonald<\/a>, though without the capital D retained.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/whatliesbeneathrattlechainlagoon.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/S6420011.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-16278\" src=\"http:\/\/whatliesbeneathrattlechainlagoon.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/S6420011-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" srcset=\"https:\/\/whatliesbeneathrattlechainlagoon.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/S6420011-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/whatliesbeneathrattlechainlagoon.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/S6420011-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/whatliesbeneathrattlechainlagoon.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/S6420011-768x432.jpg 768w, https:\/\/whatliesbeneathrattlechainlagoon.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/S6420011-1536x864.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/whatliesbeneathrattlechainlagoon.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/S6420011.jpg 1920w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Addington Way<\/span><\/strong> is named after <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Henry_Addington\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Henry Addington.\u00a0<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Of course we then have <strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Gladstone Drive<\/span><\/strong> after Liberal <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/William_Ewart_Gladstone\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">William Gladstone<\/a>, and <strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Law Close<\/span><\/strong> after the short lived 7 month PM\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Bonar_Law\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Bonar Law.\u00a0<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/whatliesbeneathrattlechainlagoon.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/S6420003.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-16277\" src=\"http:\/\/whatliesbeneathrattlechainlagoon.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/S6420003-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" srcset=\"https:\/\/whatliesbeneathrattlechainlagoon.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/S6420003-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/whatliesbeneathrattlechainlagoon.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/S6420003-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/whatliesbeneathrattlechainlagoon.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/S6420003-768x432.jpg 768w, https:\/\/whatliesbeneathrattlechainlagoon.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/S6420003-1536x864.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/whatliesbeneathrattlechainlagoon.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/S6420003.jpg 1920w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>In between the two non consecutive terms of Gladstone there was three time Tory boy\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Robert_Gascoyne-Cecil,_3rd_Marquess_of_Salisbury\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Robert Gasgoyne- Cecil ,<\/a>which is where the name <strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Cecil Drive<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0comes in. Of course <strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Peel Way\u00a0<\/span><\/strong>gets its name from rozzer founder <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Robert_Peel\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Robert Peel.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>There is <strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Balfour Drive\u00a0<\/span><\/strong>which I declare is named after <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Arthur_Balfour\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Arthur Balfour<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Another Cul-de-sac off Temple Way <strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Russell Close<\/span> <\/strong>is named after the obscure Whig <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/John_Russell,_1st_Earl_Russell\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">John Russell.\u00a0<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Asquith Drive<\/span><\/strong> obviously after <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/H._H._Asquith\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">double H Asquith<\/a><\/p>\n<p>One of the weakest prime ministers ever <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Neville_Chamberlain\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Neville Chamberlain<\/a> gets the nod with <strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Chamberlain Close.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Winston_Churchill\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Winston Churchill<\/a> is immortalised with the T shaped <strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Churchill Close, <\/span><\/strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\">whilst his\u00a0 successor <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Clement_Attlee\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Clement Attlee<\/a> gets <strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Attlee Close.\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Peace time <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Stanley_Baldwin\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Stanley Baldwin<\/a> has <strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Baldwin Close<\/span><\/strong> named after him. One of the newer add ons to the estate is <strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Campbell- Bannerman Way <\/span><\/strong>where <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Henry_Campbell-Bannerman\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Henry<\/a> of the same double barrel gets the nod.<\/p>\n<p>We then get to the more recent &#8220;dearly&#8221; departed.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Harold_Macmillan\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Harold Macmillan<\/a> sees <strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Macmillan Close <\/span><\/strong>commemorated after him.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Anthony_Eden\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Anthony Eden<\/a> , <a href=\"https:\/\/whatliesbeneathrattlechainlagoon.org.uk\/?p=12827\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the Albright and Wilson shiller<\/a> and another candidate for the worst British Premier ever has greatness thrust upon him with <strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Eden Close<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The two Labour shiesters ironically built on the former sewage works are enshrined in history with <strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Wilson Drive<\/span><\/strong> (<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Harold_Wilson\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Harold Wilson<\/a>), and <strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Callaghan Drive<\/span><\/strong>, (<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/James_Callaghan\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">James Callaghan<\/a>)- who was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.saveoursandwellcanadageese.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/Scan_20170212.png\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">another AW arse licker in chief.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>There are other streets on the estate which allude me <strong>Gordon Drive<\/strong> (the Scottish gold flogging goldfsh?) , <strong>Shinwell Crescent<\/strong> and <strong>Healey Drive<\/strong>, and not to mention <strong>Warwick Gardens, Cartwright Gardens, Hamilton Drive<\/strong> and <strong>Thornton Close<\/strong> on the periphery which may not have been named after number 10 Downing Street squatters. Answers on a postcard please if you can tell me anything about these origins. Were they that desperate that they named a street after eyebrows Dennis? <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Keir_Hardie\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Keir Hardie<\/a> of <strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Keir Hardie Walk<\/span><\/strong> fame was never a Prime Minister of this country, and neither was <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hugh_Gaitskell\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Hugh Gaitskell<\/a> of <strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Gaitskell Terrace<\/span><\/strong> though obviously the Labour lovies wanted to honour them as if they had been.
