In this post I thought I&#8217;d take a look at some of the noticeable landmarks going in a clockwise direction.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Rowley Hills<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/friendsofrowleyhills.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Rowley Hills<\/a>&#8211; consisting of\u00a0 Turner\u2019s Hill, Bury Hill, Portway Hill and Darby\u2019s Hill- all no stranger to exploitation for minerals and then dire waste disposal schemes. This type of greened area creation from such industrial devastation is a good example of how the former brickworks tip should be used- for rewilding, and not some housing scheme\u00a0 &#8220;garden city&#8221; shit in the sky. It is already rich for butterflies and other fauna and compliments Sheepwash Nature Reserve as a nature corridor.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/whatliesbeneathrattlechainlagoon.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/S3870008.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-15228\" src=\"http:\/\/whatliesbeneathrattlechainlagoon.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/S3870008-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" Hill, the highest point in the West Midlands county, with an altitude of 269 metres (883 ft) above sea level, are pretty ugly, but are landmarks visible from every angle, and this is the one from the mound.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/whatliesbeneathrattlechainlagoon.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/S3870009-e1688580936121.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-15229\" src=\"http:\/\/whatliesbeneathrattlechainlagoon.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/S3870009-e1688580936121-169x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"269\" height=\"478\" three churches of Dudley<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Though I&#8217;m certainly not standing on consecrated ground \ud83d\ude06 panning West I can see three holy temples that have stood there for a combined set of centuries, and a view which <a href=\"https:\/\/whatliesbeneathrattlechainlagoon.org.uk\/?page_id=402\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Samuel Barnett<\/a> and others would also have known all those years ago from atop the brickworks.<\/p>\n<p>The first of the trio of Grade II listed constructions in view is The Kates Hill\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/St_John%27s_Church,_Dudley\">St John&#8217;s Church.\u00a0\u00a0<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The graveyard is notable as the resting place of local legend &#8220;The Tipton Slasher&#8221; , boxer William Perry.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/whatliesbeneathrattlechainlagoon.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/S3920008.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-15243\" src=\"http:\/\/whatliesbeneathrattlechainlagoon.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/S3920008-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" central churches , or &#8220;Top church&#8221; and &#8220;bottom church&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>The former on the left is officially known as <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Church_of_St_Thomas,_Dudley\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">&#8220;St Thomas and St Luke&#8221;<\/a> and was rebuilt in the early 19th Century.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/whatliesbeneathrattlechainlagoon.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/S3870010.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-15230\" src=\"http:\/\/whatliesbeneathrattlechainlagoon.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/S3870010-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Church_of_St_Edmund,_Dudley\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">St Edmund\u00a0\u00a0<\/a>and has another rebuilt history with the current building completed in 1724.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/whatliesbeneathrattlechainlagoon.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/S3870013.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter class=\"wp-caption-text\">A much more modern feature of the large Tesco visible.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>A fourth Church St James&#8217;s, of similar design to St John&#8217;s at Eve Hill is obscured by the tree canopy.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Dudley Castle and Zoo chairlifts.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Everyone in the West Midlands has probably visited <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Dudley_Zoo\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">this site<\/a> in their lifetime, and though I am no fan of zoos, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Dudley_Castle\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the iconic castle<\/a> is part of the fibre of the area. The chair lifts date from 1958. Following archaeological investigations, the castle is also credited to have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dudley.gov.uk\/things-to-do\/museums\/dudley-museum-at-the-archives\/dudley-castle-finds\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the world&#8217;s oldest rubber johnnies<\/a>, albeit without the rubber. This cinema opened in 2001 and is part of the Castlegate retail and business park, a part of which stands on what was once the Dudley cricket and football ground. A prime example of how appearances can be deceptive, and I have spent many an hour looking across here at ailing birds and trying to spot dead ones back in the day.
