The amateur chemist teachers obviously believed it would be a good trick to make their class sit up and take interest in demonstrating the more spectacular chemical reactions- in this case allowing the P4 to be exposed to oxygen where it would spontaneously combust.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia,palatino,serif; font-size: 14pt;\"><strong><span style=\"text-align: left; color: #525252; text-transform: none; line-height: 1.43; text-indent: 0px; letter-spacing: normal; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; text-decoration: none; word-spacing: 0px; display: inline !important; white-space: normal; orphans: 2; float: none; -webkit-text-stroke-width: 0px; background-color: #ffffff;\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">P 4 (s) + 5 O 2 (g) \u2192 P 4 O 10 (s)<\/span> <\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>But as this post shows, there appear to have been many laboratory disasters arising from these failed experiments, leaving question marks as to why this banned rat poison and toxic hazard was ever allowed anywhere near such reckless idiots (and by that I mean the teachers!).\u00a0 \ud83d\ude33<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_11941\" style=\"width: 510px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/whatliesbeneathrattlechainlagoon.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/roly1.png\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-11941\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-11941\" src=\"http:\/\/whatliesbeneathrattlechainlagoon.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/roly1-300x186.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"310\" srcset=\"https:\/\/whatliesbeneathrattlechainlagoon.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/roly1-300x186.png 300w, https:\/\/whatliesbeneathrattlechainlagoon.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/roly1.png 672w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-11941\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Rooooooowwwwlaaaand! Sign him up for Albright and Wilson<\/p><\/div>\n<p><strong>The Torbay Express and South Devon Echo<\/strong> reported that a school teacher had been hurt on <strong>17th December 1959<\/strong> in a &#8220;mishap&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>The master required hospital treatment after being burnt when cutting a piece of white phosphorus. The waxy solid nature of the material had also caused splinters which became infused with the surface , also spontaneously combusting. I think this shows poor handling technique on the part of this teacher, as it was quite preventable.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/whatliesbeneathrattlechainlagoon.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/spill5.png\"><b><\/b><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-12025\" src=\"http:\/\/whatliesbeneathrattlechainlagoon.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/spill5-300x137.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"229\" srcset=\"https:\/\/whatliesbeneathrattlechainlagoon.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/spill5-300x137.png 300w, https:\/\/whatliesbeneathrattlechainlagoon.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/spill5-768x352.png 768w, https:\/\/whatliesbeneathrattlechainlagoon.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/spill5-1024x469.png 1024w, https:\/\/whatliesbeneathrattlechainlagoon.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/spill5.png 1079w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: georgia,palatino,serif; font-size: 12pt;\"><span style=\"color: #333333; line-height: 107%;\">The following year<\/span><b><span style=\"color: #333333; line-height: 107%;\">, The Birmingham Daily Post <\/span><\/b><span style=\"color: #333333; line-height: 107%;\">of ironically<\/span><b><span style=\"color: #333333; line-height: 107%;\"> 5th November, <\/span><\/b><span style=\"color: #333333; line-height: 107%;\">gave another account of a clumsy Wednesfield Grammar school teacher who had been burnt by P4.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Incredibly after he had been burnt by a piece of phosphorus, he had also been unaware that some carbon disulphide was in the same fume cupboard that he dropped the phosphorus into. This chemical dissolves white phosphorus , and then when exposed to air flames in a violent exothermic reaction. Having dropped the bottle of CS2 a fire started leading a a rapid evacuation of the classroom.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/whatliesbeneathrattlechainlagoon.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/spill6.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-12026\" src=\"http:\/\/whatliesbeneathrattlechainlagoon.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/spill6-102x300.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"886\" srcset=\"https:\/\/whatliesbeneathrattlechainlagoon.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/spill6-102x300.png 102w, https:\/\/whatliesbeneathrattlechainlagoon.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/spill6.png 219w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: georgia,palatino,serif; font-size: 12pt;\"><b><span style=\"color: #333333; line-height: 107%;\">The 28th June Haywood Advertiser of 1963 <\/span><\/b><span style=\"color: #333333; line-height: 107%;\">told how a lab class assistant had been gassed by phosphorus petoxide. It required firemen with breathing apparatus to extinguish the fire. No explanation is given as to why someone with supposed chemical knowledge would attempt to put out a phosphorus fire with a water extinguisher!<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/whatliesbeneathrattlechainlagoon.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/spill7.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-12027\" src=\"http:\/\/whatliesbeneathrattlechainlagoon.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/spill7-177x300.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"507\" srcset=\"https:\/\/whatliesbeneathrattlechainlagoon.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/spill7-177x300.png 177w, https:\/\/whatliesbeneathrattlechainlagoon.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/spill7.png 288w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Another careless educator was burned as reported again by <strong>The Torbay Express and South Devon Echo of 10th February 1972. <\/strong>Once again the p4 had been exposed to air, igniting before she could put it back in water. A piece of phosphorus had been dropped on the floor, which resulted in a rapid evolving of toxic phosphorus pentoxide.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/whatliesbeneathrattlechainlagoon.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/spill9.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-12029\" src=\"http:\/\/whatliesbeneathrattlechainlagoon.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/spill9-73x300.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"824\" srcset=\"https:\/\/whatliesbeneathrattlechainlagoon.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/spill9-73x300.png 73w, https:\/\/whatliesbeneathrattlechainlagoon.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/spill9.png 147w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>It is all very well congratulating teachers on an evacuation, but the statement about &#8220;treatment&#8221; by washing the skin with water after exposure to phosphorus pentoxide is absolutely laughable, and it is not attributed to any particular person. The fact that the bench had to be removed to get rid of the piece of phosphorus shows how this chemical continues to burn through material when any oxygen is present. This is how it burns to the bone when people come into contact with it, and why phosphorus burns are some of the worst you can possibly get.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/whatliesbeneathrattlechainlagoon.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/spill12.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-12032\" src=\"http:\/\/whatliesbeneathrattlechainlagoon.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/spill12-240x300.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"240\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/whatliesbeneathrattlechainlagoon.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/spill12-240x300.png 240w, https:\/\/whatliesbeneathrattlechainlagoon.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/spill12.png 379w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 240px) 100vw, 240px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: georgia,palatino,serif; font-size: 12pt;\"><span style=\"color: #333333; line-height: 107%;\">A local story from<\/span><b><span style=\"color: #333333; line-height: 107%;\"> 19th October 1988 Sandwell Evening Mail <\/span><\/b><span style=\"color: #333333; line-height: 107%;\">tells how another teacher from Smethwick&#8217;s West park college\u00a0 was burnt by phosphorus, but by the misadventure of his pupils blowing it onto him when they used a fire extinguisher of C02.
