AW BOMBS AT LARGE #1"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/whatliesbeneathrattlechainlagoon.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/2030_0101rhodia0328.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-10489\" src=\"http:\/\/whatliesbeneathrattlechainlagoon.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/2030_0101rhodia0328-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" srcset=\"https:\/\/whatliesbeneathrattlechainlagoon.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/2030_0101rhodia0328-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/whatliesbeneathrattlechainlagoon.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/2030_0101rhodia0328-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/whatliesbeneathrattlechainlagoon.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/2030_0101rhodia0328-1024x768.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I have looked extensively at <a href=\"http:\/\/whatliesbeneathrattlechainlagoon.org.uk\/?page_id=135\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the production<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/whatliesbeneathrattlechainlagoon.org.uk\/?page_id=376\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">use<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/whatliesbeneathrattlechainlagoon.org.uk\/?page_id=2439\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ultimate abandonment <\/a>of these useless but highly dangerous white phosphorus filled half pint milk bottles, manufactured by Albright and Wilson during The Second World War for an anti-tank guerrilla warfare campaign that never transpired. <a href=\"http:\/\/whatliesbeneathrattlechainlagoon.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/scan0031.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Over seven million <\/a>of them were produced between 1940-42 at Oldbury and satellite factories , and then dispatched to Home Guard units around the country in <a href=\"http:\/\/whatliesbeneathrattlechainlagoon.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/scan00071.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">wooden boxes of 24.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>All came with clear instructions for use, and some later designs were made to be fired from a gun known as <a href=\"http:\/\/whatliesbeneathrattlechainlagoon.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/scan00072.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the Northover projector<\/a>. Many were used for demonstrations and training, but by 1943 it was clear that they were useless for anything but gathering dust.<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 505px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/whatliesbeneathrattlechainlagoon.org.uk\/?attachment_id=321\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-321\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/whatliesbeneathrattlechainlagoon.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/2030_0101rhodia0463.jpg\" alt=\"AW BOMB PRECAUTION SIGN\" width=\"495\" height=\"303\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Copyright I Carroll<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Many had been buried under water or in back gardens, and then as time passed by, so people forgot like absent minded squirrels as to where they had buried them.<\/p>\n<p>It is widely believed that many ended up destroyed at Rattlechain lagoon before AW became a private limited company, conveniently operating the site as a Government contractor for the ministry of supply before their own waste stream went into the drink.<\/p>\n<p>But some AW bombs, or &#8220;the number 76 grenade&#8221; as they were officially known have been uncovered by accident only after many years from housing developments or curious individuals with metal detectors. Some have caused serious injuries to those unfortunate to have dug them up. It appears that a child had wandered down the basement of a\u00a0local Government building\u00a0and got burnt. This was once again an Air Raid Precautions store, indicating that perhaps they had taken charge of these incendiary scrap that the Home Guard could not handle. Developments for housing uncovering these devices would become a very familiar theme going forward.
