Even in the days before any health and safety legislation- (we know that <strong>Samuel Barnett<\/strong> had lost an arm at the nearby <strong>Stour Valley Brickworks<\/strong>), calamity appeared all around the chain. The 1899 bursting of the banks\u00a0 and emptying of 7 miles of canal into the 100 yards deep marl pit is <a href=\"http:\/\/whatliesbeneathrattlechainlagoon.org.uk\/?p=5769\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">well documented.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Not so well known are <a href=\"http:\/\/whatliesbeneathrattlechainlagoon.org.uk\/?p=9003\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the deaths of two men<\/a>, who were working on heightening the brickworks stack\u00a0in 1906.<\/p>\n<p>This post deals with another serious accident between the two World Wars at the brickworks, and interestingly gives an account of when they were still operating.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_10193\" style=\"width: 510px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/whatliesbeneathrattlechainlagoon.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/brickrat4.png\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-10193\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-10193\" src=\"http:\/\/whatliesbeneathrattlechainlagoon.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/brickrat4-300x137.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"228\" srcset=\"https:\/\/whatliesbeneathrattlechainlagoon.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/brickrat4-300x137.png 300w, https:\/\/whatliesbeneathrattlechainlagoon.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/brickrat4-768x350.png 768w, https:\/\/whatliesbeneathrattlechainlagoon.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/brickrat4-1024x466.png 1024w, https:\/\/whatliesbeneathrattlechainlagoon.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/brickrat4.png 1078w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-10193\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Position of the former Rattlechain brickworks superimposed on the current lagoon site.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>From <strong>The Birmingham Daily Gazette of 7th March 1930<\/strong> we learn that A Tipton man- <strong>Fred Turner<\/strong> was given a \u00a390 compensation payment after breaking his leg three years earlier whilst working on the face of the pit. By now Barnett himself was dead, but his sons had obviously taken over the business. One wonders if the delay in payment and the long layoff of poor Fred was due to the litigious nature of this company and The Barnett&#8217;s in attempting to avoid blame.
