The Stour Valley Brickworks are no longer there.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/whatliesbeneathrattlechainlagoon.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/vono3.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-9887\" src=\"http:\/\/whatliesbeneathrattlechainlagoon.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/vono3-241x300.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"621\" srcset=\"https:\/\/whatliesbeneathrattlechainlagoon.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/vono3-241x300.png 241w, https:\/\/whatliesbeneathrattlechainlagoon.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/vono3.png 515w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a>A further ten year gap <a href=\"http:\/\/whatliesbeneathrattlechainlagoon.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/scan0006-700.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">provides visible pictorial evidence of this pool. <\/a>It appears at some stage around this time that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gracesguide.co.uk\/Vono\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Vono works <\/a>were beginning to use the site as &#8220;a tipping area&#8221;- (see further below). Vono produced a range of furniture and bedding mattresses, and this putrescible material appears to have been deposited into the site.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/whatliesbeneathrattlechainlagoon.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/2lagoon2-1.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-10006\" src=\"http:\/\/whatliesbeneathrattlechainlagoon.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/2lagoon2-1-294x300.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"408\" srcset=\"https:\/\/whatliesbeneathrattlechainlagoon.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/2lagoon2-1-294x300.png 294w, https:\/\/whatliesbeneathrattlechainlagoon.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/2lagoon2-1.png 392w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Images from 1950 show the steep sided nature of the site and its proximity to The Netherton Branch Canal. In 1956, Vono became &#8220;Duport&#8221;- a combination of Dudley and port. The pool is\u00a0is also still there by <a href=\"http:\/\/whatliesbeneathrattlechainlagoon.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/scan0008-700.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">1961. <\/a><\/p>\n<p>It is clear that when the Duport group invested in its subsidiary &#8220;London works steel mill&#8221;, in the mid 1960&#8217;s that the old Vono lagoon&#8217;s days were numbered.\u00a0\u00a0Planning applications <strong>3222<\/strong> and <strong>3289<\/strong> which superceeded this saw <strong>&#8220;The erection of a rolling mill and ancillary buildings&#8221;.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>It is confirmed in minutes of a meeting held between Staffs County council, Rowley Regis MB and London works steel on 14\/3\/61 refers to land at the rear of the site allocated for the deposit of waste material which would continue to be used by Vono Limited for tipping from their foundry.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/whatliesbeneathrattlechainlagoon.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/Scan_20190127.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-10021\" src=\"http:\/\/whatliesbeneathrattlechainlagoon.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/Scan_20190127-161x300.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"933\" srcset=\"https:\/\/whatliesbeneathrattlechainlagoon.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/Scan_20190127-161x300.png 161w, https:\/\/whatliesbeneathrattlechainlagoon.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/Scan_20190127-768x1433.png 768w, https:\/\/whatliesbeneathrattlechainlagoon.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/Scan_20190127-549x1024.png 549w, https:\/\/whatliesbeneathrattlechainlagoon.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/Scan_20190127.png 1153w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The right of way at John&#8217;s Lane, passing to the East of the lagoon was eventually diverted, and the new Albright and Wilson boundary formed- leaving some of the former A&amp;W land within the Duport company\/London steel works new border,<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"> (i.e heavily potential for phosphorus based contamination.)<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_4942\" style=\"width: 510px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/whatliesbeneathrattlechainlagoon.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/scan0079.jpg\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4942\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-4942\" src=\"http:\/\/whatliesbeneathrattlechainlagoon.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/scan0079.jpg\" alt=\"scan0079\" width=\"500\" height=\"691\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-4942\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Planning application for the new steel works<\/p><\/div>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/whatliesbeneathrattlechainlagoon.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/Scan_20190127-3.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-10022\" src=\"http:\/\/whatliesbeneathrattlechainlagoon.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/Scan_20190127-3-213x300.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"564\" srcset=\"https:\/\/whatliesbeneathrattlechainlagoon.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/Scan_20190127-3-213x300.png 213w, https:\/\/whatliesbeneathrattlechainlagoon.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/Scan_20190127-3-768x1083.png 768w, https:\/\/whatliesbeneathrattlechainlagoon.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/Scan_20190127-3-726x1024.png 726w, https:\/\/whatliesbeneathrattlechainlagoon.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/Scan_20190127-3.png 1524w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/whatliesbeneathrattlechainlagoon.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/2030_0101rhodia0346.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">By 1969<\/a>, visual evidence of the Vono lagoon&#8217;s disappearance is quite striking, the London Steel works now in operation with extensions added in subsequent planning applications . The infilling of the lagoon, and removal of waste from it then took place , haphazardly and appallingly dumped into <a href=\"http:\/\/whatliesbeneathrattlechainlagoon.org.uk\/?page_id=8344\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">&#8220;the Duport tip&#8221;.<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/whatliesbeneathrattlechainlagoon.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/scan0009.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">By 1971<\/a>, there is still part of the Vono lagoon shown. It is clear that the Duport group were extending their operations to the rear of the site and over the remaining lagoon in <a href=\"http:\/\/whatliesbeneathrattlechainlagoon.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/scan0060.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">this 1973 letter to Albright and Wilson. <\/a><\/p>\n<p><b>We have looked at what happened to the <\/b><a title=\"changing boundaries of rattlechain lagoon\" href=\"http:\/\/whatliesbeneathrattlechainlagoon.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/scan0087.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>site boundaries <\/b><\/a><b>in detail after this point and the changing face of John\u2019s Lane <\/b><a title=\"all change\" href=\"http:\/\/whatliesbeneathrattlechainlagoon.org.uk\/?page_id=4916\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>HERE. <\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/whatliesbeneathrattlechainlagoon.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/scan0011.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">By 1981<\/a>, all trace of the former water filled lagoon are now gone.
