Its area covers part of the ceremonial county of <a title=\"Somerset\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Somerset\">Somerset<\/a> but it is administered independently of the non-metropolitan county. Its administrative headquarters is in the town hall in <a title=\"Weston-super-Mare\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Weston-super-Mare\">Weston-super-Mare<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Between 1 April 1974 and 31 March 1996, it was the <b>Woodspring<\/b> district of the <a title=\"County of Avon\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/County_of_Avon\">county of Avon<\/a> . The district of Woodspring was formed from the municipal boroughs of Weston-super-Mare, <a title=\"Clevedon\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Clevedon\">Clevedon<\/a> and <a title=\"Portishead, Somerset\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Portishead,_Somerset\">Portishead<\/a> urban districts, Long Ashton Rural District, and part of Axbridge Rural District.<\/p>\n<p>This authority is of interest to us because of two sites related to Albright and Wilson&#8217;s previous white phosphorus production at Portishead, and also the satellite waste dump in Clevedon where white phosphorus contamination is known to have caused problems.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>\u00a0 North Somerset is a unitary authority in England.
