White and yellow phosphorus are the same, though\u00a0 we will refer to elementary phosphorus as \u201cwhite phosphorus\u201d throughout. The first source from a 1933 publication entitled <b>\u201cFINE CHEMICALS- the products of Albright and Wilson Ltd.\u201d <\/b>predates the Rattlechain waste disposal era- thus the company were fully and clearly aware of both the risk and dangers posed by disposing of material containing this chemical into the environment- <b>THEY JUST DID NOT CARE THAT THEY WERE DOING IT OR CARE OF THE UNSUSTAINABLE PROBLEMS IT WOULD CAUSE TO FUTURE GENERATIONS.<\/b><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/whatliesbeneathrattlechainlagoon.org.uk\/?attachment_id=638\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-638\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-638\" src=\"http:\/\/whatliesbeneathrattlechainlagoon.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/scan00181.jpg\" alt=\"Fine chemical?\" width=\"479\" height=\"665\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><b>1 MAIN DIFFERENCES IN ALLOTROPY BETWEEN RED AND WHITE PHOSPHORUS<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Once again the best source of information on this subject is sought from Albright and Wilson themselves. The necrotic decay of the jaw known as <a title=\"Industrial disease\" href=\"http:\/\/www.humanresourcesmba.net\/10-deadliest-occupational-diseases-in-history\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>\u201cPHOSSY JAW\u201d <\/b><\/a>was a known industrial hazard associated with the substance and with match making,\u00a0but\u00a0the\u00a0<strong>&#8220;systematic neglect on the part of this firm to comply with the obligations as to reporting cases of phosphorus poisoning&#8221;<\/strong> was clear.<\/p>\n<p>Red phosphorus, which is not toxic, but can still cause severe burns, replaced the earlier matches but the dangers of white phosphorus in industry continue to the present day.<\/p>\n<p>Albright and Wilson employees at the Oldbury site are known to have contracted it as late as the 1960\u2019s and the firm employed their own dentist, offering free dental care, as Rhodia continue to do today.<\/p>\n<p>From Albright magazine May 1972\u00a0\u00a0 in an article entitled <b>\u201cA question of toxicity\u201d<\/b>, the then central research and development manager Tony Childs and principal medical adviser John Hughes are asked the question<\/p>\n<p>\u201c <b>Q. Does A+W produce highly toxic chemicals?<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>A: Yes. Probably the best known toxic substances produced by the company is white phosphorus: when its fumes are breathed in for long periods this can cause the disease necrosis called \u201cphossy jaw\u201d which occurs in people with weak or faulty teeth. However this is a recognised industrial disease so men who work with phosphorus in the factories, are regularly checked for tooth trouble.\u201d\u00a0<\/b><b>\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/whatliesbeneathrattlechainlagoon.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/scan0070.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-2665\" src=\"http:\/\/whatliesbeneathrattlechainlagoon.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/scan0070.jpg\" alt=\"scan0070\" width=\"569\" height=\"633\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><b>It should be noted here that the lie concerning \u201cweak or faulty teeth\u201d\u00a0 is a method of drawing attention away from the cause of people having weak or faulty teeth caused by the chemical in the first place, and perhaps an advertisement to buy one of their biggest clients&#8217; products- colgate toothpaste.<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Ten years earlier, Hughes et al \u00a0undertook a <a title=\"phossy jaw- AW's dirty little secret\" href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC1038164\/pdf\/brjindmed00198-0001.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">study in 1962 <\/a>of Albright and Wilson workers exposed to phosphorus. A number of case studies are cited; and though not explicitly stated where, we believe that they are all from the Oldbury works- more lab rats there to have studied.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;In <span style=\"font-family: Courier;\">probably <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Courier;\">under 10%, <\/span>extraction of teeth is <span style=\"font-family: Courier; font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"font-family: Courier; font-size: medium;\">followed <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Courier;\">by <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Courier; font-size: medium;\">considerable delay <\/span>in <span style=\"font-family: Courier; font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"font-family: Courier; font-size: medium;\">healing, without any sign of any other effect. <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Courier; font-size: medium;\">Our <\/span>dental <span style=\"font-family: Courier; font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"font-family: Courier; font-size: medium;\">records have <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Courier; font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"font-family: Courier; font-size: medium;\">not <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Courier; font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"font-family: Courier; font-size: medium;\">been kept <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Courier; font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"font-family: Courier; font-size: medium;\">in <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Courier; font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"font-family: Courier; font-size: medium;\">such <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Courier; font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"font-family: Courier; font-size: medium;\">a <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Courier; font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"font-family: Courier; font-size: medium;\">way <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Courier; font-size: medium;\">that <\/span>firm <span style=\"font-family: Courier; font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"font-family: Courier; font-size: medium;\">figures <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Courier; font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"font-family: Courier; font-size: medium;\">can <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Courier; font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"font-family: Courier; font-size: medium;\">be quoted although this finding <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Courier; font-size: medium;\">has <\/span>been <span style=\"font-family: Courier;\">frequently <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Courier; font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"font-family: Courier; font-size: medium;\">noted. <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Courier;\">Phosphorus <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Courier; font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"font-family: Courier; font-size: medium;\">workers <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Courier; font-size: medium;\">are <\/span>taken off <span style=\"font-family: Courier; font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"font-family: Courier; font-size: medium;\">exposure <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Courier; font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"font-family: Courier; font-size: medium;\">to <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Courier;\">phosphorus\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Courier; font-size: medium;\">for extractions <\/span>and not <span style=\"font-family: Courier; font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"font-family: Courier; font-size: medium;\">allowed back <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Courier; font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"font-family: Courier; font-size: medium;\">until <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Courier; font-size: medium;\">they have clinically <\/span>healed. The <span style=\"font-family: Courier; font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"font-family: Courier; font-size: medium;\">period <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Courier; font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"font-family: Courier; font-size: medium;\">of <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Courier; font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"font-family: Courier; font-size: medium;\">non-exposure <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Courier; font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"font-family: Courier; font-size: medium;\">is thus <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Courier; font-size: medium;\">exactly <\/span>known, but since <span style=\"font-family: Courier;\">non-phosphorus <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Courier; font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"font-family: Courier; font-size: medium;\">workers may <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Courier; font-size: medium;\">not <\/span>be <span style=\"font-family: Courier;\">re-examined, <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Courier; font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"font-family: Courier; font-size: medium;\">the <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Courier; font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-family: Courier; font-size: small;\">rate <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Courier; font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"font-family: Courier; font-size: medium;\">of <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Courier;\">healing <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Courier; font-size: medium;\">of their sockets <\/span>has <span style=\"font-family: Courier; font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"font-family: Courier; font-size: medium;\">not <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Courier; font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"font-family: Courier; font-size: medium;\">necessarily\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Courier; font-size: medium;\">been recorded.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"left\">&#8220;The shortest period of exposure <span style=\"font-family: Courier; font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"font-family: Courier; font-size: medium;\">to <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Courier; font-size: medium;\">phosphorus fumes leading to <\/span>necrosis was 10 months (two cases) and the longest was 18 <span style=\"font-family: Courier; font-size: medium;\">years. <\/span>Again with the generally long onset, assessment of the degree of exposure is very difficult. Fume is more prevalent during some periods of working than others. The atmospheric content of toxic substances varies greatly from point to point, and some men work harder and so breathe more<span style=\"font-family: Courier;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"left\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Finally, no estimations of phosphorus in the atmospherehad been taken at this time.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"left\">&#8220;The essence of <span style=\"font-family: Courier; font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"font-family: Courier; font-size: medium;\">our dental <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Courier; font-size: medium;\">programme is to ensure <\/span>maximal <span style=\"font-family: Courier; font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"font-family: Courier; font-size: medium;\">dental fitness <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Courier; font-size: medium;\">in prospective employees. <\/span>This has meant the <span style=\"font-family: Courier; font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"font-family: Courier; font-size: medium;\">rejection of <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Courier; font-size: medium;\">otherwise suitable <\/span>men in a time <span style=\"font-family: Courier; font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"font-family: Courier; font-size: medium;\">of <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Courier; font-size: medium;\">great labour shortage. Before any <\/span>exposure <span style=\"font-family: Courier; font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"font-family: Courier; font-size: medium;\">the <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Courier; font-size: medium;\">workman is made dentally fit, and if <\/span>this <span style=\"font-family: Courier; font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"font-family: Courier; font-size: medium;\">is impracticable <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Courier; font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"font-family: Courier; font-size: medium;\">he is <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Courier; font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"font-family: Courier; font-size: medium;\">rejected <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Courier; font-size: medium;\">outright. A <\/span>further <span style=\"font-family: Courier; font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"font-family: Courier; font-size: medium;\">reason <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Courier; font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"font-family: Courier; font-size: medium;\">for rejecting\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Courier; font-size: medium;\">men with neglected <\/span>mouths is that they <span style=\"font-family: Courier; font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"font-family: Courier; font-size: medium;\">are more <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Courier; font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"font-family: Courier; font-size: medium;\">than\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Courier; font-size: medium;\">usually &#8220;accident <\/span>prone&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p align=\"left\">After attaining adequate <span style=\"font-family: Courier; font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"font-family: Courier; font-size: medium;\">standards <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Courier; font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"font-family: Courier; font-size: medium;\">of <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Courier; font-size: medium;\">dental fitness <\/span>men <span style=\"font-family: Courier; font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"font-family: Courier; font-size: medium;\">are allowed <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Courier; font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"font-family: Courier; font-size: medium;\">to\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Courier; font-size: medium;\">be exposed. Those most <\/span>heavily exposed (on the phosphorus plant itself) are inspected <span style=\"font-family: Courier; font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"font-family: Courier; font-size: medium;\">every two <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Courier; font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"font-family: Courier; font-size: medium;\">months,\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Courier; font-size: medium;\">those regularly exposed <\/span>every <span style=\"font-family: Courier; font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"font-family: Courier; font-size: medium;\">four months, and those with\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Courier; font-size: medium;\">casual exposure, <\/span>for <span style=\"font-family: Courier;\">example, <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Courier; font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"font-family: Courier; font-size: medium;\">the <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Courier; font-size: medium;\">works manager and the medical <\/span>adviser <span style=\"font-family: Courier; font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"font-family: Courier; font-size: medium;\">every <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Courier; font-size: medium;\">six months.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0Rhodia appear to have continued their \u201cchecking\u201d arrangement, thereby no doubt trying to mitigate any potential litigation against them.<\/p>\n<p>In an article from The Blackcountryman summer 1991, in an article entitled \u201ccor ! strike a light!\u201d ,long term former works manager at Albright and Wilson Oldbury Peter D.
